3 Keys to a Successful Home Buying Experience

It’s important to buy a home in a way that you are comfortable with. This includes making sure that you can make the mortgage payments and that you’re happy with the home itself. There are a few tips to help you become more successful.

Figure Out What You Can Afford

You need to take the time to figure out what you can afford. It’s not just about the mortgage payment, either. Some homes are going to be more expensive than others because of where they’re located, including property taxes and HOA fees. Spend some time analyzing your budget. Identify what your debt-to-income ratio is at, it will impact your ability to get approved for a mortgage. Once you identify the monthly amount that you can put towards your housing, it will make it easier to establish what kind of home you can afford.

Select a Realtor

A realtor is a person who will help you navigate the homes in your area and help you with getting pre-approved for a mortgage. A top realtor is going to go out of their way to make sure that you get what you want. This includes getting a good home at a good price. They will negotiate for you, answer questions about the process, and guide you through every step of the way.

When you’re choosing a realtor, talk with some of their most recent clients. Do a little research to make sure that they’re licensed and if they have any professional awards. It’s also a good idea to look at current listings that they have to see if they’re currently representing homes that you would be personally interested in. If you don’t feel as though you’re a priority with your realtor, don’t hesitate to look for someone else.

Map Out the Neighborhoods

You want to make sure you’re happy with where you’re living. Take some time to identify what is most important to you, such as good schools, close proximity to shopping centers, and the overall age demographic of the neighborhood. The Mortgage Reports suggests using county records, Facebook, Google, Google Earth and other online resources to identify what you are looking for and avoid mistakes. From there, you can start establishing neighborhoods you want to be in. Particularly if you are in a large city, identifying a few neighborhoods will make it easier for a realtor to do their job.

Taking the time to do your research early on will make it easier for you to streamline the process. You can make better decisions when you’re informed and have a knowledgeable realtor at your side.
