History
Fort Myers has a rich history dating back to the 1850s, when the US constructed a base during the Seminole Indian Wars. The fort was torn down in the 1870s, but some of the wood was used for buildings in what is now Downtown Fort Myers. Later on, Thomas Edison would build a winter home down here, followed by Henry Ford. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates features 20 acres of historic homes and botanical gardens, including Edison’s 1928 Botanical Research Laboratory, where different species of plants Edison planted are still there.
