What Is South Carolina Known For?

South Carolina, called The Palmetto State, is known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities, great barbecue, beautiful beaches, advanced manufacturing, golf courses, and rich history. The state also ranks among the fastest-growing in the country.

People typically move into some of the state’s thriving cities, including Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Spartanburg, and Florence. They also have moved into some of the smaller towns, especially in the upstate region, including Anderson, Simpsonville and Laurens.

Why move to South Carolina? What is South Carolina known for? The following offers some of the answers why more people than ever are making the Palmetto State their home (by the way, the nickname comes from the state tree, the Sabal Palmetto).

Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities

South Carolina offers many options for people who like to spend their free time enjoying the great outdoors. In Greenville and the surrounding Upstate region, there’s so much to do that “you’ll never run out of options,” according to the Visit Greenville site. Those options include:

  • Hiking
  • Kayaking and canoeing
  • Zipline canopy tours
  • Wildwater rapids
  • Running, walking and biking trails
  • Waterparks
  • Many parks, including Caesars Head State Park, Cedar Falls Park, Chimney Rock State Park, Devils Fork State Park

Great Barbecue!

Cooked “slow and low,” South Carolina’s barbecue rates among the best in the country. And they’re serious about it! The state considers itself the birthplace of barbecue and home to the original four sauces: mustard, heavy tomato, light tomato and vinegar. Different parts of the state tend to favor specific variations of these four originals. Of course, while great barbecue is what South Carolina is known for, it’s also turned into a foodie’s paradise, with local restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisine popping up everywhere.

Beautiful Beaches

No one is going to out-Florida Florida, but South Carolina comes close. There’s a reason that Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island are familiar names to most people. Both offer some of the most beautiful beaches in the world along the Atlantic Coast. Other, lesser-known beaches are also amazing, including Kiawah Island, Folly Beach, Edisto Beach, Front Beach on the Isle of Palms, and Sullivan’s Island. Most of these are known for their beauty and the fact they are usually not too overcrowded.

Advanced Manufacturing

South Carolina has become a major advanced manufacturing hub in the U.S., creating jobs in a variety of industries that build complex products. That’s one of the reasons that South Carolina has become the sixth fastest-growing state in the country, according to U.S. News. More than 30 foreign countries are represented by manufacturing in South Carolina. The National Association of Manufacturers reports that about 250,000 people in South Carolina work in manufacturing with an average salary of $72,715.

Golf Courses

Golfers enjoy South Carolina because of the many great courses in the state. The state offers 355 courses, which ranks the state 17th in the country even though South Carolina is ranked 40th in population. Golf Digest ranks The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island as the best in the state. Other top-ranked courses include Greenville Chanticleer, Yeamans Hall Club, and Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island.

Rich History

South Carolina has a long, rich history. The state was among the original 13 colonies and became the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788. It was also the first state to secede from the Union in 1861, leading to the Civil War. Historical sites, including antebellum homes, magnificent churches and plantation houses are all around the state, giving history buffs plenty of options.

These are some of things that South Carolina is famous for and what is drawing people to the state. For those looking for a place to start a new chapter in their life, from retirees to those just starting their careers, South Carolina has a lot to offer.
